A new direction
Monday, August 5th saw me head out from Cave in Rock IL across the Ohio River on the ferry to Kentucky. I will be traveling along the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route. Northeast through Kentucky, to Indiana, back into Kentucky and eventually heading northeast through Ohio to Erie PA.
I was greated warmly in Kentucky by welcoming signs and more steep hills.
Monday found me in Henderson KY. after a 65 mile hilly day. Tuesday was a short ride to Owensville KY. I was tired, thunderstorms were predicted so I pulled up short. I went to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Mueseum. The mueseum was interesting and a great way to spend the day. There is also an award winning park on the river front.
Wednesday I rode to Hawesville KY. Many steep hills, quiet roads, cornfields and old farms. The lowland along the Ohio River supports industry that depends on the river for transport. Aluminum production, coal fired power plants grain towers and more dominate. I camped in a nice town park. No drugs allowed. Watch out for the meth heads. All fair warnings, just unnerving.
Thursday was another new state for me, Indiana. I spent the night in an RV park. Friday I continued on to Madison IN a city on the Ohio River. I stayed in a nice cozy hotel, the Riverboat Inn and Suite's.
Today, Saturday, I crossed the Kentucky River to Kentucky again. When ever the day starts at the river you can expect to climb. Climb I did today. Again today I wanted to ride farther then I did. The hills decided otherwise. Only 50 miles but over 3000 verticle feet climbed dictated a short day.
A couple of more days will bring me to Ohio and closer to the end.
